CONFESSIONS OF A MODEM ADDICT
By Charles Buchanan
(NOTE: The following message was written by Mr. Buchanan in Echonet's
MODEMERS echo. He has given permission for it to be posted here.)
Hello All!
Well my boss node (modem addiction mentor) dropped into this echo and issued
the following words :
ME> * Your message of Thursday July 09 1992 to All...
CB>> our Echonet boss node. Our double agent boss node has agreed to help
CB>> both sides in our setups but will remain in a neutral stance as far as
CB>> the mailwar.
ME> ...you're never really addicted until you learn to sysop...
Oh, I don't know. My modem is usually sitting here with its led's hanging out
and gasping for air after I poll for mail.
Hey everybody, there he is. That's him, Mike Ernst. He's the one who got me
started. Now I must tell you my tale of how I became a modemer.
Mike told me to start reading the local areas on-line at his BBS like SYSOP
and SOB CHAT. Then he said,
"Pssst, I have other wonders over here if you want to take a look".
Well, I did look at some of them but I said to myself,
"I won't look at them everyday, just on weekends".
Then Mike whispered to me "XRS". And I thought to myself, "What could that
possibly mean ?". As I walked around the BBS I stumbled across this door that
had 'XRS Entrance' labeled above the archway. And I thought to myself,
"Should I venture forth ? Was I ready for this ? What was on the other side ?
Should I really go in there ?".
With my palms sweaty and my fingers shaking on the keyboard, I went into to
the 'XRS Room'. Inside the XRS room stood a door keeper. The door keeper
unfurled a scroll and showed me all of the many wonders available to me in
here. I was astonished. Then he told me,
"But first, you must get the magical scroll reader called XRS, come back, and
we will talk again. The XRS scroll reader will be the guide on your journey".
At this point I became suspicious of Mike and the door keeper. Were they
working together ? Did they have a master plan ? Or was it even a master/slave
plan ? I talked to these two friends of mine called Qmodem and GSZ/Mobyturbo.
Qmodem said that he could get me to the land where the XRS crate resided. Then
it was up to Mobyturbo to get the XRS crate and transport it back home. 'Moby'
worked furiously and as fast as he could bringing the XRS crate home. I then
went back to the XRS door keeper again and told him,
"I have been to the land where I found the XRS crate and I now have it on the
workbench at my house. Now what do I do ?"
The door keeper then told me,
"Go home, unpack the crate, remove all of the contents, and study them. When
you feel you are ready, come back and we will talk again".
With the help of another friend of mine called Pkunzip, I was able to undo the
packaging of the XRS crate and spread the contents of the crate upon my
workbench. I stood back in a bit of fear of the unknown at first. But my
curiosity got the better of me. With a chill running down my spine, I gazed
upon the wisdom of the XRS scroll. It told of the many great wonders from all
over the world that could be brought into my humble abode using the magical
powers of the XRS scroll reader. The scroll mentioned that I needed a tool
called a 'text editor' in order to assemble the XRS scroll reader. I got the
text editor on my workbench and proceeded to assemble the XRS scroll reader.
After I felt that that the XRS scroll reader was fully assembled, I flipped
the switch and turned it on. The XRS scroll reader began whirring, making
strange sounds and came to life with brilliant colors. I stood back from the
workbench unsure of what was about to transpire. Then a loud and booming voice
spewed forth,
"You did not read the wisdom of the XRS scroll thoroughly. Be gone and don't
come back until you have brought me a treasure chest full of riches from far
away lands !!"
With that I fled from my workbench. Qmodem, myself and Moby went back to the
XRS room. The XRS door keeper was there and said,
"I've been expecting you. I see that you have talked to XRS the scroll reader
and now you have returned to begin your journey. You must now choose a packer
to help you on your trek to the far away lands. You have several choices --
ARJ, ZIP, LZH or ARC. Most addicts, er uh, I mean most of our many visitors
choose ZIP".
I had decided that this might be a trap so I chose ARJ to use as my packer (as
he was fairly young and I felt he could be trusted). Next the door keeper
asked me,
"Which far away lands do you intend to visit on your journey ? We have many
choices here. I will leave you here by yourself to decide in private and I
will be back when you have made your final decision".
I looked long and hard and finally made my decision to take a very long
journey and to visit many different and exotic locations. I then gave my
itenirary to the door keeper. The door keeper then told me,
"You do indeed have a long journey ahead of you. Next you must decide how you
will travel. You must make your choice now of your prefered method".
He laid out the modes of transportation before me and waited for my choice.
Moby whispered that he could help me if I chose Zmodem as my prefered method.
I accepted his advice and chose to travel by means of Zmodem.
After I made my choice, the door keeper went in the back room for a while.
When he emerged, he presented me with a very large treasure chest and told me,
"You must now board Zmodem with your treasure chest. When you reach your final
destination, present this treasure chest to the great XRS scroll reader."
My journey did indeed take quite awhile. Moby helped out and did make Zmodem a
little faster. I made it back to my workbench with the treasure chest in hand.
I went back to the great and powerful XRS scroll reader. I humbly knealt down
before the magical XRS scroll reader and presented my treasure chest to him.
It contained all of the many scrolls and treasures from around the world. The
magical XRS scroll reader smiled and said,
"You have done well. You have gathered a wide variety of interesting scrolls
from many mystical lands. Now I must tell you -- once I perform my magic,
there is no turning back. Do you wish to continue on your journey ?".
With a lump in my throat (and my knees knocking), I stood up straight, stuck
my chest out, and proudly proclaimed with a roar,
"I am ready. I have not traveled these many roads and this long distance to
stop now before I reach my destination. I will not turn back now. Perform your
magical powers oh great and powerfull XRS scroll reader so that I may gaze
upon the many scrolls from other mystical kingdoms".
The XRS scroll reader then made many strange sounds and displayed many
dazzling and colorful lights before my eyes. When the XRS scroll reader was
finished, I saw rows upon rows of scrolls laid out before me. I was in a state
of a hypnotic trance. I then understood the power and the magic of the scroll
reader and knew that I would never be the same person again.
Now whenever Qmodem and I visit Mike Ernst, he has a gleam in his eye and a
knowing smile. For he is the one who guided me into the world of modem
addiction.
